Pierre Gonnord; REGARDS

Pierre Gonnord is a french businessman who fell in love with Madrid, “Spain has such a confidence in its future, while France only trusts its past” he says. He became photographer almost by chance in 1998, after a friend asked him to take a portrait of the Soprano Teresa Berganza, in Cuenca. His images impressed famous gallery owner and art expert Juana de Aizpuru.
Pierre Gonnord claims he uses little techniques other than minimal lighting to capture his portraits with his Hasselblad. There is something that recalls Caravaggio, or religious painting of XVII century in his treatment of light, on the weathered faces he finds in the gypsy community or fringe characters he hunts in the streets.
I offered to exhibit his work in Louis Vuitton shops in a previous life. Missed opportunity to meet him in flesh.
